The first course was Crabmeat and Shrimp Salad over Grilled Orange Polenta with Herb Oil. (The next time I would do a plain polenta but that is my personal preference). In the glass the wine displays our typical bright green, yellow-gold color. On the nose it is a big bowl of fresh fruit, with intense green apple, fresh honeydew melon, and citrus in the background. The flavors follow, leading with classic Napa Valley Chardonnay varietal character and showing strong Bartlett pear. The palate is one of fresh, huge fruit - lovely, luscious, and mouthwatering. So this wine should be really be rocking now.

Chopped walnuts later became an integral part of the dish. We served our version on top of a bed of lettuce. This course was paired with our favorite Newton Unfiltered 2003(Rated RP 95) According to Robert Parker, "the light green/gold-colored 2003 Unfiltered Chardonnay displays hints of marmalade, caramel, liquid rocks, and honeysuckle, good background acidity, more obvious structure and backwardness than the previous two vintages, excellent weight, and a long finish." This beautiful Chardonnay is reminiscent of a top premier cru from Chassagne-Montrachet. We started out by watching the exciting Belmont Races on Arronomink's side patio. Everyone, myself included, thought Mine that Bird was a shoe in but Summer Bird flew past him and became the champion. I felt bad for Calvin Borrell the jockey because if he had won it was have been a moment for the history books - Jocky (not horse) wins triple crown.

Weather wise - you could not have wanted a more perfect evening. Stewart and Pam are so much fun - we always have alot of laughs. We also ran into our mutual friends the Arnolds - Marion and Roger were there to have dinner with another couple who were running late and for a moment we thought they would be having dinner with us also.

Arronominks food is delicious - my soft shells were very good and my mother enjoyed her crab over angel hair pasta.

The Arnold, Giordano, Pappas and Tregerman Families For Dinner

Another Dinner Party.
The real purpose of Memorial Day is to commemorate U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. For many American Families this holiday is the first time they get out or clean up their barbecue and cookout. We do not own a barbecue so we did this memorial day dinner indoors.

For hors d’oeuvres we had Cold Crab Dip, Fig and Gruyère Palmiers and Mini Frittatas with Ham and Cheese. Even though the crab dip was excellent, the dinner party favorite was the Gruyère Palmiers and Mini Frittatas with Ham and Cheese.

For First Course we had Shrimp with Prochiutto and Basil This was paired with was paired with a California Sauvignon Blanc Quivira (pronounced "Key-VEER-ah!") a Sauvignon Blanc 2007 from The Fig Tree Vineyard. Quivira vineyards was founded in 1981 by Holly and Henry Wendt who are from the Philadelphia area and whose daughter Laurie was a class behind me at Agnes Irwin. This vineyard which is located in the heart of Sonoma's Dry Creek area. Wine Enthusiast (WE) rated this wine 92 points and said “it has an affusive nose of lime blossom and pink grapefruit." Even though this is an excellent wine I don’t think I did the wine justice in this food pairing – back to the drawing board.

Our Salad has Raspberry Jam Salad Dressing, Dried Cranberries, Carmelized Walnuts and Blue Cheese. This salad was first had on Memorial Day at Allessandra Coukos’s house. It was and still is delicious. Our salad course is paired with Shannon Ridge Lake County 2007 Roussanne. In 1861 Lake County was created from parts of Napa and Mendocino counties and has since been well known as a farming community. According to the winemaker the Shannon Ridge Lake County 2007 Roussanne’s color is “Clean, clear, and straw like”; the Aroma smells like “Pear, Citrus, and Tropical Fruit” and the Flavor tastes like “Lychee, Pear, and Root beer cola/spice” and lastly the Texture is “Smooth, crisp, well-balanced” Our guests really enjoyed this wine. A special thanks to Bob at the Ardmore liquor store – this was totally his idea and bears repeating.

Dinner was Barbecue Chicken, Wheat Rice Pilaf ( I would like to try a pineapple rice dish) and Grilled (broiled) Tomatoes with Pesto. We paired this with a 1999 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. According to the tasting notes, “A dark hue fading to a pink, youthful rim. A lovely, herby, sweet cherry, plummy, dusty fruit nose. A very juicy, bone dry palate with typically firm, food-beating acidity. Plenty of flavour too; cherries and plums. Some nice extract present as well, and a balanced backbone of integrated tannins which coat the mouth after a while. Great, fresh, juicy, flavoursome barbecue wine.”

Dessert was Homemade Candied Walnut Blueberry Pie and homemade Devon Fudge.

Over 100 years later, it has become the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. It is internationally recognized, and one of the most exciting events to happen on the Main Line. Top riders from all over the world compete at Devon and often times you will spot a famous face like Bruce Springsteen whose daughter Jessica rode in several classes this year or fun loving Carson Cressley who has been riding here for years.

Sunday is one of my favorite days at Devon. I love the Devon pleasure Carriage drive. Unfortunately we missed George Fitzpatrick who was driving a four wheeled vehicle due to too much enjoyment of our chanopagne brunch at the Radnor Hotel. Also I was disappointed that there were only 3 or 4 four in hand carriage entries whereas years ago there were often a dozen or more four-in hand carriages.
